Health classes explained
What Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard mean and how your health moves you up or down.
Carriers classify term life coverage by rate class. Class titles shift slightly across companies, but the system stays the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes called Best Preferred or Elite Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, plus extra fees for greater-than-normal risk. People using tobacco products get a different classification scale with higher costs.
What underwriters look at
Physical dimensions (height and weight), blood pressure and cholesterol levels, family background for heart trouble or cancer before age 60, vehicle history, pharmaceutical use, type of work and recreational activities, and any nicotine consumption. Obtaining the highest tier needs great outcomes everywhere; Preferred permits slight concerns; Standard Plus and Standard accept handled disorders like controlled high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question requires honest self-assessment: Excellent lines up with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Fair with Standard. Rates match this category; the carrier determines the real tier following underwriting. When in doubt, get quotes for two categories to evaluate, and allow the application finalize it. Claiming a higher rating doesn't reduce your final payment; it just makes your forecast wrong.
Susman Insurance Agency helps identify carriers with rules that suit your particular health picture, which can be more valuable than the advertised rate.
