No-exam life insurance
Eligibility for expedited underwriting, the mechanics of the process, and what happens if you don't qualify.
Nowadays, several carriers provide expedited underwriting: for applicants in certain age or coverage brackets, they make decisions using information from the application, prescription records, driving history and other public records instead of a medical check. Approval sometimes happens within 24 hours. This website displays whether a medical exam is needed, might be requested, or won't be required for each product.
What it changes
Skipping the exam is not equivalent to skipping underwriting. Your statements get checked, and policies based on untrue information can be challenged for two years. If the carrier's research turns up concerns, it may still require an exam or testing; you decide whether to move forward.
Who tends to qualify
Frequently, those under about 60 requesting coverage under the carrier's fast-track limit, with no significant past medical issues and no nicotine use in the prior year or longer. If recent medical exams with lab tests are on file, some carriers will accept those instead of a new exam.
If you qualify for an exam, it's normally a 20 to 30-minute session conducted by a medical professional at your location in the Gilroy region, at no charge. For applicants in good health, test results might improve your rating tier, so it doesn't always hurt your rate.
